Simplify Your Spring Cleaning

The iron days of February are melting away.

Spring is a rejuvenating time of rebirth and resolutions (you might even say it’s more restoring than New Year’s Eve)! In particular, it’s a time to clear out what isn’t working for you anymore. This might take shape in a healthier way of eating or cleaning out your cluttered closet.

Yet, the idea of spring cleaning can be daunting. This article will discuss three easy ways to simplify the process, arm you with some cleaning tips and help make it a restorative process instead of a stressful one!

How to Schedule and Make the Time to Clean

If you work, you know that time is limited — whether it’s behind a bar or a desk. Days off are for rest, relaxing, errands, appointments and other life necessities. Carving out time to do a deep clean on top of your regular weekly chores can easily become overwhelming.

One thing to keep in mind is that Rome wasn’t built in a day. It might be a cliche, but big projects like these are best tackled efficiently and methodically. You need a game plan!

To start, grab your planner and start by identifying the days where you know you’ll have a bit of extra time — be it as generous as an hour and a half or as little as 20 minutes. Next, figure out the areas that most need a deep cleaning and prioritize accordingly.

Make a Checklist Organized By Room

Now that you have your game plan initiated and have sorted the areas of your home that require attention first, it’s time to get specific! Having a spring cleaning checklist is crucial for a successful and stress-free deep clean.

The first order of business? Make sure you have everything that you will realistically need:

Gloves
Disinfecting wipes
Trash bags
Sponges/toothbrushes
Paper towel/rags

Once you’ve secured the necessary tools, it’s time to get the ball rolling. Not sure where to start? Here’s a sample checklist:

Kitchen: Scrub floors, clean oven, wipe down outside and interior of cupboards, organize the pantry and clean fridge.
Washroom: Bleach tub, scrub the grout, organize drawers, clean the toilet (don’t forget the bottom!) and replace the shower curtain.
Living room: Dust ceiling fixtures, wipe down walls, clean baseboards, wash couch covers and vacuum.

Notice how the living room portion was done in a ‘top to bottom’ order? This is intentional. Cleaning top to bottom in areas like living rooms and bedrooms ensures that you don’t end up vacuuming fallen dust twice.

Lastly, dress for the occasion. Wear comfortable and breathable clothing that you don’t mind a spot or two of bleach getting on!

Decluttering Tips (What to Do With Your Old Things)

Simply getting rid of unused items relieves a lot of stress from spring cleaning. It can be personally healing to unburden yourself of years of accumulated things.

If you’re feeling on edge or strung out when you come home, even if your home is ‘clean’ — it’s probably time to declutter.

Getting started:

Visualize an organized space. It works!
Start by getting rid of items that don’t require much thought, like flyers and junk mail.
Remove items from the kitchen that don’t belong there (the dining room table, anyone?)
Create a ‘yes’ and ‘no’ pile – and keep it firm.
If you haven’t used an item in a year, get rid of it.
A lot of your unused items will still have value, and the sooner they’re out of the home, the better. When it comes to items like furniture and clothing, consider donating them or putting them up for sale on sites like Kijiji or Facebook Marketplace. Local consignment shops are great options too, and will help you support a local business while getting rid of some clutter!
