There are a number of difficult aspects of moving, from packing and sorting to the sheer scope of keeping track of everything you need to do. One of the tougher parts of a move, however, is dealing with bulky and heavy objects. If you don’t do it properly, you could damage the object or even sustain an injury.
Here are some moving tips that will help you safely handle bulky and heavy objects.
Before you try to move something heavy, try to remove as much as you can from it to make it lighter and easier to carry. Empty the drawers and remove them if possible. The same is true for shelves, doors, and anything else that can come off. Take seats and cushions off couches and chairs. You may even want to consider taking off legs, knobs, handles, or anything else that sticks out of large or bulky items, since these can make them difficult to move around.
If you can’t remove doors or drawers, tape or strap them shut so they don’t open during the move. This will make it easier to get them where they need to go and help avoid damage during transport.
In addition to having the right moving supplies (boxes, tape, etc.), you’ll also want to make sure you have the right tools to move large items safely. Using the right tools will make it easier to move heavy boxes and bulky furniture.
Some tools that you may want to use include a dolly, stair rollers, lifting straps, glides (or sliders) for pushing items across the floor, and much more.
Before you start moving, think about what large items you’ll need to deal with, where they’ll need to go, and what tools will help you accomplish these tasks. Having a plan and the tools in advance will help everything go more smoothly on moving day.
Bubble wrap, blankets, and pads can help protect your possessions while you’re moving. Wrap them tightly so the wrap doesn’t come off. Not only will this protection help when your items are on the truck, but it will also make it less likely that they’ll be damaged while you’re moving them around. This could even protect them if you accidentally drop something.
Using the right lifting techniques can make it easier to get your items where you need them to go and help you avoid injury as well.
Whenever possible, try to drag, push, or slide items rather than lift them. Use ramps for getting up and down stairs instead of carrying heavy items. For the times when you do need to lift something, try to carry the weight in your legs and not your back. Bend from your knees and not your waist, carry items close to your body, and don’t twist or make any fast movements while you’re carrying something heavy.
In addition to padding the items you’re carrying, you’ll also want to protect any doorways that you’ll be going through. Use blankets, styrofoam, boxes, and other items to keep your possessions from scraping against the sides of a doorway. You may want to remove doors and even molding in the doorway to make it easier to get your items through.
Wear clothing that is easy to move around in and that is unlikely to get caught on anything you’re carrying. Make sure your toes are protected with sturdy shoes just in case you drop something.
