Moving during the wintertime is never anyone’s first choice! However, with our Canadian weather and long months of cold temperatures and snow, you may not be able to avoid it. If you find yourself having to undergo a winter move, don’t worry — Macho Movers can help!
To make matters easier, we’ve put together some tips on how to make moving in the winter as stress-free and smooth as possible.
Icy sidewalks, steps and walkways are dangerous in general. However, they can become a huge hazard if you are carrying heavy furniture in or out of a home.
We suggest making sure you shovel, salt and clear all areas that your movers will be using — including the driveway, street and alleyway if necessary. If you have icicles hanging from your home, you should also knock these down. You will want to ensure that everyone remains safe , which in turn will allow the job to be completed more efficiently and reduce the risk of damage to your belongings.
The last thing you want is to finally be moved out of a property and then have to deal with dirty and damaged flooring from the move. To avoid this, make sure you lay down plastic tarps and mats to protect your floors. The movers will be making numerous trips in and out of your home, in addition to possibly tracking in snow and dirt (no matter how careful they are). Make sure your hardwood and tile stays free of scratches and that your carpet doesn’t get stained. This simple step can save you a huge headache and expense at the end of the day.
Think about it — with multiple doors and access points open during the move, how practical is it to keep your furnace on? It will be working itself silly trying to heat the home, which can end up costing you a pretty penny as well.
Some thoughts should be given when moving houseplants during the winter. Take into consideration how far the trip will be and where the best place is to transport them. The back of a moving truck may not be the ideal location for delicate indoor houseplants, especially tropical variations. Cold temperatures are not going to be received well by your houseplants.
To keep your beloved plants safe, we suggest transporting them yourself in your vehicle and making sure to adequately cover them with tissue, paper and plastic to protect them from potential shock. You’ll also want to make sure the plant’s soil is dry when moving them, as wet soil and cold temperatures is another bad combination.
Winter weather can change on a dime, which is why you certainly don’t want to have your movers carrying items such as couches, beds or electronics if wet snow suddenly starts coming down. We recommend preparing a stockpile of sheets, blankets and tarps in a convenient location so that if there is a change in weather, you can easily cover and protect your possessions before being transported outside.
If you find yourself needing to move during the winter, our team at Macho Movers can help you make it a safe and efficient process. We have years of winter moving and storage experience and are equipped to assist with both residential and
